FloodSax alternative sandbags stopped floodwater from reaching the electrics and gas inside a West Yorkshire company.
Mechanical and electrical contractors A F Connell are based in a mill at West Vale near Halifax in Calderdale and were hit by flooding twice in a couple of weeks.
The first time a water main burst, sending water pouring into the company’s cellar through air vents.
Yorkshire Water came to fix the problem as an emergency and gave Connell’s some FloodSax alternative sandbags to build a protective wall around the air vents to stop any more water getting in.
Jason Hawkins from A F Connell said: “The water was around a metre deep in the cellar by then and was rising up towards the gas and electricity meters inside which could have caused some serious damage but the FloodSax stopped any more water from getting in.
“It then rained very heavily a few days later and it looked like floodwater was going to get into our offices. I phoned all the builders’ merchants in the area to see if anyone had any prefilled sandbags but no-one seems to stock them any more so I then thought about FloodSax and bought a box of 20 instead.
“In the end they were far better than sandbags anyway, easier to manoeuvre and build into an effective flood barrier.”
FloodSax were devised by Environmental Defence Systems which is based in Huddersfield, just five miles from Connell’s premises.
Many business and homeowners now rely on FloodSax alternative sandbags to stop floodwater from getting in and also soaking up internal escapes of water.
Immerse FloodSax in water and the gelling polymer inside absorbs the water and then retains it, making the FloodSax inflate to become an instant sandbag but without any sand. They are then easy to stack into highly effective flood barriers to keep flood water out or to divert it down drains.
FloodSax come vacuum-packed in packs of five and in their dry state are ultra-flat with a large surface area which makes them ideal to soak up drips, leaks and spills indoors, especially in hard-to-reach places such as beneath boilers, below radiators and underneath pipes. They are also ideal to soak up rainwater getting into properties through leaky roofs and windows or rising up from the ground.
Around 3 million FloodSax have now been sold worldwide.
They are available online or through stockists across the UK. More information at https://www.floodsax.co.uk/buy/uk-suppliers/
